ZamZam Water

Zamzam water is the water which is taken from the Zamzam well, which is located in masjid al-haram Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The well dates back to the times of Prophet Ibrahim PBUH. The water is considered holy for Muslims.

The Zamzam water is stored, and some are transported to Madinah. The water sent to masjid Al haram and Masjid Al Nabawi. And the other stored water was packed to ICAO standards so the pilgrims can carry in the aircraft safely. All the Airlines flying into Jeddah or Madinah Allows a passenger with an Umrah Visa or hajj Visa to carry a bottle of Zamzam packed in ICAO standard.

ZamZam well

ZamZam well is well in Makkah inside the masjid Al haram. The history of the Zamzam dates back to the prophet Ibrahim Pbuh period. An estimated existence of more than 4000 years. The water is considered holy for Muslims.

That ZamZam was destroyed for a certain period before the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. And it is reported that prophets grandfather Abdul Muthalif restored it.

Its pumps are 18.5 liters per Second. ZamZam well is only 30m deep. It is excavated using hands. I mean, it is dug by hand. Its internal diameter range from 1.08 to 2.66 m. Its annual average production is around 0.5 million cubic meters of volume.

The history of Zamzam well

Accordingly to the command of Allah, Ibrahim PBUH left Hajar PBUH and their son Ismael PBUH and walked out of the desert. Ismael PBUH, who was an infant, was crying, so the mother desperately looking for water. She ran back and forth between mount Safa and mount Marwa seven times searching for water. The infant Ismael PBUH scrapped the land with the feet where suddenly water sprang out.

The word Zamzam comes from the word "Zome zome' meaning "stop stop'. These words were uttered by the Hajar Pbuh after the water had quenched their thirst and still gushing out.

The area around the spring later converted into a well. The well attracted travelers with the caravan and became the resting place. Then slowly became a trading city of Makkah, also known as Bakkah.

Prophet Muhammads' PBUH heart was removed and washed with Zamzam water and filled with faith and wisdom.

Location of the zamzam well

Zamzam well is located a few meters away from the Multazam or the door of the Kaaba.some say it is approximately 21 steps to the EAST. The custodians of the mosque from time to time decided to expand the Mataf area to accommodate the crowd coming into the Masjid Al Haram. Therefore the well is not visible now. The area where the well was located is indicated with Tiles written ZamZam in Arabic, as the picture is shown below. In the Mataf Area.

Throughout history, to accommodate the increasing amount of pilgrims, the ZamZam well and its structure surrounding was modified. Finally, it was covered from the above, and the Mataf area was expanded for uninterrupted tawaf. As of now, they are using modern technology to supply water from the Zamzam well and developed the Mataf area. This action now helped to facilitate of more pilgrims to perform tawaf around Kaaba on the ground floor.

Appearance of the ZamZam well

It was a well before with a copper bucket and rope. Where the water was uplifted with a bucket, now the original Appearance of the Zamzam well can be seen in the basement of the Mataf area. See the picture below for reference. The well is protected by glass panels for a clear view of the well. Unfortunately, no visitors are allowed to see this well.

Where does ZamZam water come from

According to the Saudi geological survey website, the well lies within wadi Ibrahim and taps water from wadi alluvium.

"Hydrogeologically, the well lies within Wadi Ibrahim, which runs through the Holy City of Makkah, and taps groundwater from the wadi alluvium and, to a much lesser extent, the underlying fresh bedrock."

It is to be noted the rainfall has a significant influence in the water production of the Zamzam well. Remember, the Rain is poured down the earth by the will of Allah.

is zamzam water infinite ?

I don't have a scientific answer to the question of whether it is infinite. But considering the history and the days it's existed and the amount of water it pumps every day, it is just a miracle. It is restricted to pump not more than 500000 cubic meter water every year by the authorities. i never heard of seen written about Zamzam well dried up, but there was a point in history before prophet it was destroyed.

The zamzam water has a pH value of 7.5- 7.7 and Alkaline. it is odorless and colorless. According to the mineral concentration report released by the ind said University a liter of zamzam water has the following in milligrams.

Is zamzam water UV treated?

According to the Saudi Geological Survey, the Water distributed to the public has been UV treated. So the Zamzam water we drink is UV treated.

Zamzam water for sale

Saudi Arabia has prohibited the commercial export of the Zamzam water. Therefore what is available in the market as Zamzam may not be actual Zamzam water. There were cases in the United Kingdom the water is founded to be contaminated arsenic. Therefore it's not a good idea to buy Zamzam water from anywhere else than Saudi.

Zamzam water dua

You can recite any Dua while drinking ZamZam water. Say bismillah before you drink it. but the following is good dua when drinking water

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمَاً نَافِعَاًً وَرِزْقَاً وَاسِعَاًَ وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ

Allahumma inni Asaluka Ilman naafi'an warizqan waasi'an wa shifa'an min kulli da'in.

"O Allah, I seek beneficial knowledge, wide sustenance, and cure from all ailments from You."

It is a best practice to sit and drink while facing towards Kaaba.

You can recite your duas. These duas can be your personal needs and wants.

How to drink Zamzam water

When you drink Zamzam water, face the Qibla, utter the name of Allah, drink it in three breaths, and drink as much as you like. When you finish drinking, praise Allah;

You can drink Zamzam while standing too. see the hadith section for the reference.

Do not waste the Zamzam water. Use only to drink. No harm if you sprinkle in your body. Do not use it to clean yourself.

The proof for this is what has been related by Abdur-Rahman ibn Abi Mulayka that, “A man came to Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him); so he asked the man, ‘Where are you coming from?’ The man replied, ‘I drank from Zamzam.’ Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘Did you drink from it as you are supposed to?’ He replied, ‘O Ibn Abbas, how am I supposed to drink it?’ Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘When you drink Zamzam water, face the Qibla, utter the name of Allah, drink it in three breaths, and drink as much as you like. When you finish drinking, praise Allah; for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, ‘The difference between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink the Zamzam water to their fill.’” (Sunan al-Darqutni 2/288 and Sunan Ibn Majah no: 3061. Al-Busiri said in his Zawa’id that its chain is Sahih)

Zamzam water benefits

Zamzam water gives many benefits to the humankind. First of all, we must understand it's a sign of Allah as a blessing. It quenches thirst and hunger. It is reported that the companions of the prophet PBUH who stay back in Makkah they had no food but Zamzam for many years. This benefit is irreplaceable by any other water. The water has healing properties. Muslim physicians have used Zamzam water to heal patients before.

In modern-day science, it is noted that the lack of minerals can cause disease in our body. Zamzam water is mineral-rich water. Refer to natural medicine websites.

Zamzam water is noncontaminated. Most of the water today is contaminated with wastes such as human waste and chemical waste. Zamzam water is yet very clean and pure as fresh from the ground.

Zamzam water is alkaline, which has amazing benefits. Today science has discovered drinking alkaline water improves health. Alkaline water reduced body fat too. Google alkaline diet.

Zamzam water contains less fluoride comparing to any water. There are conspiracy theories on how fluoride water deteriorates health of the humankind.

Is Zamzam water contaminated with Arsenic?

I certainly don't have an exact answer for this question. But arsenic was found beyond the safe level in the water sold as Zamzam in the UK. This finding was published in the BBC. But Allah knows the best.

There was no confirmation whether the alleged water is really the Zamzam water.

There are studies conducted by naturopathic doctors that reveal a human body needs 60 essential minerals to our body. Arsenic is one of the 60 critical mineral when taken in a controlled amount.

Zamzam water in the bible

It is mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 21:17-20.

The incident of Zamzam was mentioned in the Bible.

17. God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

18. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

19. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

20. God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.

The above verses clearly mention Hagar PBUH and Hazarat Ismael PBUH.

Zamzam water in Quran

There are no Quranic verses that directly mention Zamzam water.

Hadeeth on Zamzam water

Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said concerning the water of Zamzam,

“It is a blessing, and it is food that satisfies.

The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for,’ so, O Allaah, I am drinking it (to quench) my thirst on the Day of Resurrection.

My roof was opened when I was in Makkah, and Jibreel (peace be upon him) came down and opened my chest, then he washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a gold basin full of wisdom and faith, poured it into my chest, and closed it up again. Then he took me by the hand and ascended with me into the first heaven.”

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said, “I gave the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) Zamzam water to drink whilst he was standing,”

It was reported that when Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) drank from the water of Zamzam, he said: “O Allaah, I ask you for beneficial knowledge, plentiful provision and healing from every disease.”

Aa’ishah may Allah be pleased with her reported that she took Zamzam water home with her in bottles, and said, “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took some of it away with him, and he used to pour it on the sick and give it to them to drink.”

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) departed (from Muzdalifah) and called for a bucket of Zamzam water. He drank from it, then did Wudoo’. (Reported by ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Ahmad with a Saheeh Isnaad).”

Saudi geological survey

Currently, the Saudi geological survey is responsible for monitoring all affairs related to Zamzam well and its water. It checks the quality of the water and maintains a threshold. If the water is below the threshold, mark the pumping if the water is stopped until the level reaches above the threshold.
